“The man who is being carried does not know how far the journey is.”

       --African Proverb

On behalf of the Founding Families of Statesmen College Preparatory Academy for Boys PCS, we want to thank you for  your one-time or annual gift to support our young male scholars. Your gift will allow Statesmen Academy for Boys students the opportunity to keep their focus on personal and academic development--and not on resources.

School Supplies and Materials

UNIFORMS - $250

“Dress for the job that you want, not the one that you have.”

We want our boys to look and feel successful when they arrive at Statesmen Academy for Boys.  We believe that the uniform that we have selected will instill confidence in our young men and allow them to practice the professional look that they will eventually become accustomed to.  To remove this as a barrier to participation in the program, we have found it necessary to provide our boys with free uniforms and assist families who need cleaning services due to lack of ready access to laundromats. With your gift of $250.00, the cost of uniforms for one year -  1 blazer, 4 white oxford shirts, 4 pairs of khaki style pants, 2 ties as well as intermediate dry-cleaning service as necessary - will be taken care of.

instructional supplies - $175

“Got us both to school on time,

To eat us a good breakfast.

Then when I got to class the teacher fussed

Cause I ain’t got no pencil...”

Statesmen College Preparatory Academy for Boys believes that we must provide our boys with the rigorous education that many have struggled to have access to.  As we traveled to high-performing schools across the nation, we found that the best schools mandated a prescribed set of academic materials that were essential for learning.  To remove this as a barrier to participation in the program, we have found it necessary to provide our scholars with the supplies necessary to focus on their learning. With your gift of $175.00, the cost of one of materials - his backpack, zip binders, folders, notebooks, calculator, pencils, pens, paper, craft materials, rulers, and any other related materials across the year and as they are needed - will be taken care of.

Classroom learning environment -$1000

“We shape our homes and then our homes shape us.”

We want our scholars to be in vibrant, lively classrooms that reflect the subjects being taught, the lives of the teachers and the learning and experience of our scholars.  This leads to a space that is relevant for our boys and encourages their optimal engagement. At the same time, we do not think that teachers should be burdened with the responsibility of paying for items that are essential to building a vibrant and relevant learning environment. For that reason, we have found it necessary to provide our teachers with $1000.00 to build their classroom environments.  With your gift of $1000.00, the environmental cost of one classroom - the extra furniture, fixtures and equipment that each teacher needs to make their classroom a special place for learning - will be taken care of.

Teacher oxygen room -$40,000

“A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others.”

Against any other profession, teachers spend an outsized portion of their personal income to provide the basics necessary to do the job. With the long hours, relationally exhaustive work and administrative duties, the personal expenditure of these resources constitute an additional “service tax” for committing to the work of educating those most in need.  Not at Statesmen! We have committed to making sure that teachers do not spend one dime of personal funds on the resources to do the job or one hour of their personal time procuring them. These materials, supplies and resources are like oxygen, not as visible as the instruction itself but critical to high quality instruction. For that reason, we have found it necessary to provide our teachers with an Oxygen Room.  With your gift of $40,000.00, the cost to install and stock one schoolwide teacher resource room for one year, all of the teacher and student resources necessary for the mission of college preparation - will be taken care of.

Local, Regional,

 National and International Travel

Local & regional trips - $25

“Better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times.”

We live in a historical city with deep roots and vibrant culture. So much of the history of our people, the country and the world is represented here. As a commitment to critical exposure, we intend to make sure that before these young men explore the nation and the world, that they explore the city and the region that they live in. With your gift of $25, the cost of one regional trip--transportation, admissions and food associated with each individual trip--will be taken care of.

Outdoor leadership camp - $500

“Great things never came from comfort zones.”

We want our boys to have many opportunities to develop a strong sense of personal confidence. We know the power of the outdoor leadership camps to create opportunities for young men to be challenged and supported by their peers. For this reason, we are scheduling a one-week leadership camp experience for Summer Bridge. With your gift of $500, transportation, admission, lodging, food and all of the camp activities for a week-long relationship and leadership development excursion will be taken care of.

national college tours - $1,500

“Seeing is believing.”

We want our scholars to be well-traveled and to possess the confidence that comes from having explored the beautiful country that they live in. We also want to use this type of travel as an opportunity to expose these young men to colleges and universities all over the nation. Seeing is believing, and we know that these college tours give our students opportunities to begin to see themselves as college students and plant the seeds of college matriculation. With your donation of $1,500, the cost of one national college tour -- transportation, food and events associated with the trip will be taken care of.

international trip - $10,000

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness and many of our people need it sorely on these account.”

At some point in their lives, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, Louis Armstrong,  Malcolm X and Alex Haley journeyed to Africa and other parts of the world. Their journeys transformed them as individuals, connecting them to the struggles of black and brown people across the world and giving them a global perspective of the shared humanity of all people no matter their race. Urban and rural areas where poverty is law can be traced back to the impact of the transatlantic slave trade. For that reason, we want our students not only to study the Middle Passage deeply, but we also want them to experience the Middle Passage so that they can understand how the historical impacts of slavery still plague many nations and many people. With your gift of $10,000--the cost associated with the international study abroad of one scholar--three to five flights, 15 to 20 hotel nights, food, admissions and special events associated with the trip will be taken care of.

Student Sponsorship

Above & beyond grant - $10,000

“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”

We are a public school and will use public funds to meet the general needs of our academic program. Quite obviously, when we decide to go above and beyond in the way that we have at Statesmen Academy for Boys, there are additional costs associated with it. We will always need to raise funds to close that gap. With your gift of $10,000--the total additional costs associated with the programmatic experience of the scholar--additional staffing support and tutoring, uniforms, materials and supplies as well as travel will be taken care of.

open access grant - $25,000

"We believe, that is, you and I, that education is not an expense. We believe it is an investment."

As a public charter school under the purview of the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board (PCSB), we receive public funds to educate only those students who are residents of Washington, DC. The DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia) is an interconnected and interdependent region that shares many public resources. Schools are not a place where that sharing is extended. And while many Maryland and Virginia residents are incredibly inspired by the promise of this program, their residency precludes their participation. We will enroll a small number of out-of-state residents who will pay tuition to the Office of the State Superintendent of Education for DC.  Unfortunately, those funds do not come to the school. With your gift of $25,000--the total cost associated with the programmatic experience of one scholar--additional staff support and tutoring, uniforms, materials and supplies as travel will be taken care of.
